Early Life
William Tecumseh Sherman was born on February 8th, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio. He was one of eleven children to Charles Robert Sherman and Mary Hoyt Sherman. It is said that William's name Tecumseh comes from his father Charles having "great fancy for the chief of the Shawnees", who's name was Tecumseh. At the age of nine his father passed away. Sherman was then raised by Senator Thomas Ewing. His named was originally just Tecumseh Sherman until around the age of ten when his first name William was added.
